The morning auction at Numazu Fish Market – INO [Numazu]

At 6:00 in the morning, I got to Numazu Fish Market “INO”. This time, thanks to a staff of the market, I was meant to tour INO. There already were so many onlookers on the second floor gallery despite a weekday early-morning. I looked down on the wholesale floor and found varieties of fishes and a throng of people around them. Right, auction ! Here in INO, not to mention seafood landed on Numazu Port, fresh seafood is carried in from all over Japan. Therefore, licensed buyers and intermediate wholesalers show up from around the country. INO is such a vigorous and exciting market ! Saba mackerel is what is landed most in Numazu, by the way. You like it ?^^

I was so special that time to be let in the market floor. I felt so excited because you know I love fishes ! Sea breams, flatfishes, squids, mackerels, horse mackerels and many more fishes, all seemed so good to me.^^ The auctions are basically bid by Kg. It goes so fast because seafood must be kept fresh. The live fishes are also traded by bidders with good prices.

After the tour of the market, the attendant was so let me in the cooled special auction room for big deals. I was so lucky because this room is rarely supposed to be open to the public. The atmosphere was rather strained, no wonder because in this room was auctioned large fishes such as Tuna and Swordfish. Especially tuna.

You know what ? The value of tuna is estimated by the cut meat of tails. Now which one do you prefer ? The upper white-looking one is to be regarded more valuable because the white meat indicates higher portion in fat.

The purchased frozen Tuna and swordfish are often cut with a large band saw because, you know.^^ Some load them onto the truck to be shipped to the next destination and others carry them to the store or restaurant nearby. On my way back, I saw just-landed fishes in a large container. They sorted them by species, mostly sardines, horse mackerels, and small squids. Large sea breams and cutlass fishes were found sometimes. Other unmarketable fishes are carried away to make them ground for fertilizer. No life is taken for nothing.
By the way, have you ever recognized the meaning of “INO” ? INO is the goddess of the sea in the Greek Myths. Sounds romantic for the name of a fish market, isn’t it ?

Basically, you can tour the fish market auction from the gallery on the 2nd floor. Groups might be allowed in the market floor for advanced inquiry. For those who are not good at getting up early in the morning, they have 3 restaurants on the second floor. Please enjoy yourself with plenty of fresh seafood at a low cost !

Numazu Fish Market INO
Access from JR Numazu Station : 10 minutes by bus, or 30 minutes walk.
Fish auction hours : 5:45 – 7:00
Admission : Free *closed every Saturday

Event Information in July [Event Information]

Fireworks Display in Atami

July has come and the weather has been becoming suddenly so crazy, I mean, killingly hot in Shizuoka. I just wonder where the rain front has gone. Never heard that the rain season has cleared in our city yet but I could say summer has come at last ! Mt. Fuji is open for climbers and some swimming beach has also been available. Kids will be in summer vacation in late-July and we will have Bon holidays in the middle of August. And, my mother’s birthday comes on July 27, not a matter for you though, I know.^^;
Anyway, Summer. What are you expecting for summer ? Love ? Forget it now ! Summer is the season for varieties of traditional festivals, especially in our Bon season. What is Bon ? It is days in the middle of August and when the spirits of our families’ ancestors come back to us. We make a fire to welcome them and also do it to say good-bye another day. Sounds intriguing ?^^ Another thing about summer is fireworks ! We have lots of fireworks displays in summer. For those who are planning to come to Shizuoka this season, I here attach Event Information in Shizuoka in July, and fireworks information in another page. Please refer to it to compose your best memories !

Mt. Fuji Opening Ceremony for Subashiri Route [Oyama Town]

July 1st is the day for the ceremonies of Mt. Fuji Climbing, traditionally held in Fujinomiya, Gotemba and Subashiri of Shizuoka Prefecture on the same day every year to pray for the safety of climbers.
I went to “Fuji Sengen Shrine” for Subashiri trail in Oyama Town to join the Ceremony. I felt so excited because I’d never been there. You know, new experiences always enhance our intelligence and sensibility.

It was overcast, about to rain. The ceremony was solemnly performed in Shinto main hall, starting with a long whoop of Shinto priest. Many concerned people got together in it to listen to him, to make a vow, and to give thanks to God. It lasted for about an hour and, believe it or not, hard rain came down on the shrine right after the ceremony. How fortunate we were not to have such a rain as that during the ceremony !

After the ceremony all carried out, I drove up to the Subashiri 5th station, where I saw quite a few people walking already in a climbing suit and boots in spite of foggy weather. The shop-men were so vigorous, which delighted me much !
Subashiri Trail is often introduced as the only one with abundant nature among 3 trails in Shizuoka. It will take about 6 hours to the top.

The current condition of Mt.Fuji Climbing, as of July 1st, is as follows,

Fujinomiya Route : As far as New 7th station.
Gotemba Route : As far as 6th station.
Subashiri Route : As far as 7th station.
*Private cars are restricted to the 5th station every weekend and other predetermined days. Please refer to the notice from here.

The opening ceremony was also held in Fujinomiya and Gotemba as well on the same day. They have respectively traditional way of it to pray for the safety of visitors from the world. These pictures are of Gotemba, by the way. I wish you try all routes to enjoy the distinctive atmospheres of each trail. I will also try Mt. Fuji climbing, or hiking, at the end of this month.

To those who has a plan for Mt. Fuji Climbing.

Be sure to get prepared enough for the climbing. The god won’t help people who don’t pay respect for the spirit of Mt. Fuji.
