History, Culture, and Tradition, these are definitely what we Japanese feel proud of. Today, I’ll introduce one of the fireworks that won the prize of “Shizuoka Tourism Grand prix” this year. This is not an ordinary fireworks that you usually see in the night sky. Ever heard of “Tezutsu Hanabi” fireworks ? It’s very simple. A man holds a large cylinder to shoot sparks in the air. Tezutsu Fireworks has 300 year history and tradition. It goes off with vigorous call-out of men to light the summer night.
At 7:30, the opening ceremony got started, surrounded by thousands of visitors. Men danced in the ground with shouts of “Sore-dasedaseyo”. Now, let me tell you how it works. The cylinder is made of bamboo with fire powder rolled by rope to tighten and strengthen it, laid on the ground, lit, and a man grab the handle to lift and hold it. They can’t avoid the fire spark even if they let the fire go on a skew. I wonder if they don’t get burnt.
Tezutsu Fireworks lasted for about an hour. Picture-takers flocked together in the front line. Indeed I see many pictures of Tezutsu Hanabi in the entries of the Tourist Photo Contest. I was so lucky then because I was in the first by chance and that enabled me to shoot a video of it. Please enjoy it.^^
Tezutsu Hanabi fireworks in Kosai City is supposed to be held in late July next year. I’ll inform the details in this blog as soon as it is fixed.
Enjoy your summer in Shizuoka !^^

I’m so busy in summer. Too many events and fireworks here and there. Not easy task to plan schedules for research and report.
This time, very lucky to me, I could go to the fireworks display at Nihondaira. Remember once I reported Nihondaira, as one of my favorite place in Shizuoka ? If you haven’t read it, please see it from here. (o^▽^)o The view from there is really spectacular.
Nihondaira Festival is held in July every year in the garden of Nippondaira Hotel, which is located on the top of Nihondaira. The garden is extremely beautiful as you can see from the picture above !
We arrived at the garden around 18:00. Small events were almost finished and people began to open picnic sheets to occupy their space for watching fireworks.
We did, as well, on the grass. Exclusively good point.
Night was coming up. The garden had already been packed as potatoes in a truck. Over the crowd could be seen the exquisite view with Shimizu Port.
Suddenly, a fire ball was set off from the ground. A flower in the night sky ! And in a second, colorful flowers bloomed one after another.
Now, enjoy the extravagant fireworks in the picture. Fireworks display of Nihondaira is one of the largest festival in Shizuoka. About 10,000 of fireworks are set off with fantastic music every year. I kept taking pictures, though sometimes my sight went outside the screen of digital camera for the overwhelming sound of BANG BANG !
With clear sky and a slight wind, it was the best day for fireworks. Have you ever seen Japanese Fireworks, by the way ? Firework craftsmen try to become so creative every year that we can’t see it without getting excited.
The fireworks display lasted for more than 1 hour. Wild applause continued even after the festival had ended.
By the way, you can enjoy the garden and the fine view free of charge. If you’ve got a chance to go to Nihondaira, be sure to drop at the garden of Nippondaira Hotel, or stay overnight at Nippondaira Hotel, to get the city of Shimizu for yourself !
Enjoy your summer !^^

The first fireworks festival in Shizuoka, on July 3rd, was held at last by the lake “Hamana-ko” in Bentenjima, Maisaka, Hamamatsu City. The beginning of Summer !
You know what ? We’ll have more than 70 festivals with fireworks this summer in Shizuoka. I attach the information about the fireworks of July to the bottom of this article. For August will be updated soon.
Anyway, let me report what I saw.
Heavy rain on that day. My sneakers and jeans were soaked to the skin. No wind, no thunder fortunately.
I asked the staff if they could make a go or no-go decision. She said, “We’ll make it no matter how much it rains”. That’s exactly what I wanted to hear, maybe.
Downpour in the night. Starved. No shelter to eat in though many food-stands “Yatai” were around.
But all bad things were whitewashed by the first sight of sparking.
Bang! Bang!! Bang!!!

Noisy but somehow cozy. Violent sound vibration reached me, pulsating my body with indescribable sensation. With awful rain out of my mind, I stared into the dark sky, listening to the sound of fireworks going off, looking for the spectacular flowers of a moment.
By the way, here at Bentenjima, you can enjoy digging clams “Shio-hi-gari” until the end of August. Crabs and hermit crabs around are so cute ! The best time is shown in the PDF.
Hamanako is one of the summer resorts in Shizuoka. Very famous for clams, more famous for eels.
There are many sightseeing spots around Hamanako. You can find some of them from the website below. I, myself, will become more positive and active to visit many spots to report you everyone !
