By location and local character the Izu Peninsula can be divided into three areas – eastern, central and western.
Facing Sagami Bay, Eastern Izu boasts many famous hot springs such as Atami Spa, Ito Spa and Atagawa Spa, and many top-class facilities including art museums and amusement parks.
It is also home to the famous Kawazu sakura, the earliest flowering cherry blossoms in Japan.
Home to Shuzenji Temple and Amagi Yugashima, Central Izu has long been a favorite of cultural figures and artists, and many famous novels such as Kawabata Yasunari’s The Izu Dancer were set here.
Surrounded by forests and greenery, you can relax by taking a forest stroll while enjoying the quiet atmosphere of the hot spring towns.
Facing Suruga Bay, Western Izu has an exquisite sunset and viewpoints from which you can look out at the varied coastline and Mt. Fuji from across the sea.
There are an abundance of sights exclusive to this area including a museum displaying traditional plaster carvings where you can admire the high artistic quality of Japanese architecture.
