Standard Public Information Symbols

As part of our basic policy "Shizuoka, a Comfortable Space" to make Shizuoka Prefecture as comfortable a place as possible for residents and visitors, we are constructing a universal-design-based website.
The public information symbols (i.e., pictograms) indicated below are used in high-traffic public facilities, such as public transportation, tourist attractions, sports venues and commercial facilities, frequented by large numbers of people. Understandable at a glance, they are a superior means of providing information in comparison with signs written in text.
In addition, due to changes in society, the needs of users have become diversified. From the perspective of a barrier-free society, there is an increasing need to make symbols that were used inconsistently in Japan more complete and uniform.
Accordingly, the Study Committee for Public Information Symbols, established by the Foundation for Promoting Personal Mobility and Ecological Transportation, a charitable corporation of the Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport, determined 125 Standard Public Information Symbols in March 2001.
The use of these Standard Public Information Symbols is being actively promoted as a common international means of conveying information. We are therefore looking to use these symbols on our web site.
