Mishima Taisha Shrine
The first shrine in Izu, enshrining ”Oyamatsumi-no-mikoto” and ”Kotoshironushi-no-kami”. There is a famous story that Minamoto-no-Yoritomo visited here for 100 days before starting to restore power to the Genji Family. The pavilions of the shrine, made entirely of zelkova wood were reconstructed in 1866 and have been designated as important cultural assets of Japan. The carvings around the eaves are also beautiful. The shrine also boasts a treasure museum with valuable temple treasures on display; fragrant olive flowers (a national natural treasure of Japan); and monuments to Matsuo Basho and Wakayama Bokusi.
